My money sack has been lower than usual and I think I know why. While I was scrolling my itunes I see from 4/20 to today I have bought 6 albums! A 7th album, "Indicud" is on vinyl and hasn't been imported into my itunes yet. Money is tight, so I do notice where my money goes, but it slipped my mind how much I pay for music. So, I just was like wow I should do a facebook status saying which albums I thought were the best, but then I thought outside the box and decided a review on my blog would be a better idea.
This is the order from least favorite to the greatest album I've bought in a month, all the music is positive minus Tyler the Creator's "Wolf". Just chill and read about music.
1. Dirty Heads- Cabin By the Sea is alright, I like dirty heads, so I like I bought the physical copy of it to hold, but the quality wise it sounds like they recorded at a cabin by the sea. The songs are pretty plain, but they hold true, so its like "cool" to listen to, but it's not mind-blowing. I would only throw this record on if I was trying to chill. Purely chill. The 3 features Matisyahu, Rome, and Del the Funky Homosapien are tight. It's cool to have such a dynamic force on the album, Mati's song feature "Dance all night" is alright, Rome's feature in Mongo Push is weak, but he's only a verse. The Dirty Heads can hold their own on the microphone killing it with the flow. Del the Funky Homosapien is hip-hop 90's rapper, so having him feature on a song is interesting and they did make a good chorus. "Smoke Rings", look it up. The top tracks on the album are: Spread Too Thin, Best of Us.
2. Tyler the Creator- Wolf is like the same reason why I like Cake, it reminds me I could write about anything. Tyler the Creator has quite the idea for making music and listening to it is like going to music class for a day. He does things that are alright, but then certain songs like Colossus, Answer, Slater, he does some good story telling. I wouldn't suggest listening to this album with a group of kids, it's dark, but a masterpiece in it's own right. I can't make my mind up about what I think about it, I probably won't for a few years. It's a good album for certain people and me being open minded as I am I accept a lot of what Tyler is going for. I think if you want to listen to something original you'll pick this record up. The top songs on the album are: Partyisn'tOver/Campfire/Bimmer, Colossus, Slater, Rusty, 48, Treehome95.
3. MGMT- Oracular Spectacular is the shit, it's music way ahead of it's time. This album came out back in 2008 and listening takes me to that memory when I first heard it, highschool. The way I'll describe this album is like Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate meets Daft Punk, it's that damn good. It's timeless, when I'm old I'll show my kids this album while their in college cause it's influential. Oracular Spectacular is the most solid set of songs that a lot of MGMT fans fell off cause of "Congratulations"(2nd Album), My favorite songs on the record are: Electric Feel, Kids, Weekend Wars, Time to Pretend, The Youth, The Handshake, Of Moons, Birds & Monsters. 7 out of 10 songs, but I love the whole album.
4. Kid Cudi- Indicud is and will be a classic cause of a few badass songs. I showed my buddy Anton a song I liked, "Mad Solar" and he said it was trippy, but for me I think it was music made before it's caught on. Kid Cudi is onto some creative ventures with songs like "Immortal" by looping the instrumental backwards and singing over it. That doesn't explain why he made it a single off his highly anticipated Junior record, but it's a song that will grow on me. I am a Kid Cudi fan so of course what I will be typing is biased, but I think Kid Cudi has made a masterpiece. When I think of masterpiece I think of imperfections blending with the perfections to form beautiful bliss. Songs that I feel I can relate to like "Brothers" and "Just What I Am" rock, but then songs like "Girls" are like c'mon maan. All in all I like this album, but it's too soon to tell how this album effects the rest of the year. My favorite songs off Indicud are: Young Lady, Just What I am, King Wizard, Solo Dolo Part II, Brothers, Mad Solar.
5. Frank Ocean- Channel ORANGE is dope. I heard this album then the next day I bought it cause I thought it was too good for me not to support. What's funny is I read Frank Ocean's coming out of the closet letter published on his website last year, so listening to this album I totally knew he is bisexual and that didn't effect the album at all. It actually helped make it more honest. A song "Forest Gump" is about a dude, but the guitar with the kickback beats will catch you singing along with the melodies Channel Orange is exactly what I didn't think it was, good. I underestimated the power of Frank's voice and song writing ability, but ya this album is good for anybody who's liked somebody before. The reason why I say that is cause this is a R&B record and a song single "Thinkin Bout You" it sets the tone for the album. My favorite songs off Channel ORANGE are: Thinkin Bout You, Lost, Crack Rock, Forest Gump, Sweet Life, Super Rich Kids, Pink Matter.
6. Vampire Weekend- Modern Vampires of the City is the most recent piece of music added to my collection and it is hott. Most mainstream hipsters won't like the album for months, but for the people it matters to song writing is phenomenal. I listened to this album twice, once just a listen through, the second time I took the lyrics of each song and sang along. I can tell I will love this album because I love Vampire Weekend and they really showed how to take a good worldly sound and mature it. Modern Vampires of the City may not be the coolest album name, but I think you have to listen to it through and through to understand why they called it that. Buy this album if you want good 2013 summer music. My favorite songs are: Diane Young, Finger back, Everlasting Arms, Unbelievers, Obvious Bicycle, Step, Hannah Hunt, Don't Lie.
7. Alt-J- An Awesome Wave is by far the freshest piece of music I've heard this year. I love An Awesome Wave because it's unpredictable and lovely. "Breezeblocks" was the sole reason why I bought the album and immediately this album connected to a good memory, so even years from now I know I will jam to this like I am while typing this shiit. (While typing I've been listening to every album talked about). An Awesome Wave has interludes that pull you in out of the music you can tell this album was worked on for a good amount of time with the amount of instruments and word choices. Listening to An Awesome Wave is like driving with the windows down on a summer day. It takes me back to the present...which sounds cool. The album art work is a radar image of a delta river in Bangladesh, so when you see it know these guys have more meaning behind their catchy hooks. My favorite songs off An Awesome Wave are: Breezeblocks, Intro, Fitzpleasure, Matilda, Tessellate, Dissolve Me, Interlude 1, Taro, MS, Bloodflood, Hand-Made, Something Good.
And that's it for 1 month.
And that's it for 1 month.
